A major project

An emblematic monument in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comte region for the 2018 edition of the Loto du patrimoine - Mission Bern, the Chateau of Bussy-Rabutin has benefited from a major worksite worth €3.6 million carried out by the Centre des monuments nationaux with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the government's recovery plan and the Bourgogne Franche-Comté region.

The work focused mainly on the Sarcus wing, named after the 19th-century owner who saved the chateau from ruin.

After a campaign of work on the structures to improve the monument's state of health, the Centre des Monuments Nationaux was able to begin restoring the interiors.

Restoration and refurnishing of the 19th century Appartment.

The Sarcus wing comprises a vestibule, a dining room, a drawing room and a boudoir on the ground floor in the eastern part of the central building, and rooms for domestic use in the wing opposite: kitchen, pantry and fruit room, as well as a bathroom.

The first floor has a classical layout with a lounge, two bedrooms and a library. These spaces are disparate in terms of function, history and conservation (two of these rooms were restored around 1970), but the ensemble retains much of its original layout and some of its decor.

On the basis of descriptive inventories and painted or engraved representations of equivalent spaces, the Centre des monuments nationaux sought to recreate a space that was as authentic as possible in terms of the decoration of the walls, the textiles, the furniture and the objects, and to create an inhabited atmosphere thanks to the lighting and the presence of small objects.

The refurbishment company has benefited from generous deposits from the Mobilier National of over forty works of art. The chateau's antique collections have also been redeployed.

From 4 April, visitors will be able to take advantage of a double tour route, and above all a dual thematic and chronological interpretation of the building.

On the one hand, the literary and artistic castle of Roger de Bussy-Rabutin (1618-1693), and on the other, the castle of its 19th century restorers, the Counts of Sarcus.
