Presentation
On 5 February 1626 an unforgettable writer was born: Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, alias the Marquise de Sévigné, one of the greatest letter-writers of the Great Century... and above all the cousin of Roger de Bussy-Rabutin.
Madame de Sévigné and Roger de Bussy-Rabutin shared much more than a name : they were from the same family, had the same lively mind, and had the same taste for observing 17th century society (sometimes piquantly). Their correspondence bears witness to an intellectual and emotional complicity, nourished by humour, irony and an acute sense of the formula. While Roger left his mark on history through his satirical writings and his turbulent destiny, Marie won posterity for the finesse and modernity of her letters.
In 2026, the Chateau ofBussy-Rabutin will be celebrating the 400th anniversary of the birth of Madame de Sévigné! Exhibitions, cultural events and surprises will punctuate the season, bringing together these two emblematic figures of the Rabutin family and, above all, of the century of the Sun King.
